Physical appearance and biologyEdit
Behaviour and traitsEdit
Tylosaurus was a giant predator. It hunted slow moving prey like ammonites, birds and turtles as well as larger creatures like sharks and Elasmosaurus. Tylosaurus were not the fastest of predators. Instead of chasing its prey, Tylosaurus would stalk and then it was ambush its prey in a short burst of speed. Being caught in its jaw meant almost certain death.
Tylosaurus were vivparous creatures, meaning that they gave birth to live young. They would then nurse their young for a few weeks. Tylosaurus live in groups of around 20 individuals, probably to provide protection to their young.
After a dive with an Archelon, Nigel Marven's boat was capsized by a family of Tylosaurus. As Nigel and his crew swam away from the predators, the Tylosaurus attacked the over-turned boat. As Nigel climbed onto The Ancient Mariner, the Tylosaurus family swam off.
During the night, whilst Nigel and co. were sleeping, a larger family of Tylosaurus was detected by The Ancient Mariner's sonar system. They then attacked the boat.
Behind the scenesEdit
List of appearancesEdit
- Tylosaurus, as well as all other mosasaurs, had a bi-lobed fluke like a shark rather than an eel-shaped tail.
- A discovery in 2014 revealed that all mosasaurs was similar in colour to modern leatherback turtles.
